    Meet Leo Wong '14

    Leo Wong ’14 bleeds Orange. As the chair of the New York City Regional Committee on the Generation Orange Leadership Council, Wong is passionate about connecting with Generation Orange alumni (Syracuse University graduates of the last 10 years) and introducing them to the wide array of programming available to them in the tri-state area. 

    “There’s no commitment in reaching out. There are so many ways to engage with us and SU,” says Wong, who graduated with an advertising degree from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. “Syracuse alumni are some of the most passionate alumni out there. Every email, every message that I’ve received or sent ends with ‘Go Orange!’ There’s always someone you can engage with or talk to if there’s anything you need.”

    Serving as a volunteer alumni leader on the Generation Orange Leadership Council is just the latest example of how Wong gives back to his alma mater. As an undergraduate, he was in First Year Players, University 100, and the Otto Tunes (a male a cappella group). Wong was also a Remembrance Scholar, served as a resident advisor, a Newhouse peer advisor, and belonged to Phi Delta Theta, a fraternity founded upon leadership and academic excellence.

    “First Year Players really became my first family on campus, meeting students from all different backgrounds unified by theater,” says Wong, who credits his experience as an active undergrad for setting the stage to become an involved alumnus. “Giving tours and talking to prospective students (with U100) was important to me. I understood the importance of visiting campus since I was someone who didn’t really have that chance until after I committed to Syracuse.”

    “We’re in college for learning, but it’s a time of discovery for college students and chance to pursue your passions,” says Wong, Associate Director, Diversity & Engagement at McCann Worldgroup, who was named one of 100 People Who Make Advertising Great by the American Association of Advertising Agencies.

    After graduation, Wong moved to San Francisco before relocating to New York City in 2016. Almost immediately, he felt the strong alumni presence in the Big Apple.

    “It’s hard to not encounter someone from SU here, especially with all of the student programs in the city,” says Wong. “There’s no excuse not to engage with the University in one way or another, and that’s pretty exciting.”

    Serving on the Generation Orange Leadership Council, Wong and his fellow board members are constantly striving to instill the same sense of Orange pride in the young alumni in New York City.

    In the middle of February, Generation Orange alumni in New York City experienced the new GO (Generation Orange) Pro event—a fun, informative workshop designed for graduates of the last decade. 

    “I really wanted to find an outlet to help me engage with current students and young alumni and connect everyone,” Wong says. “I’ve met so many people from so many walks of life that happen to be SU alumni, and I’m grateful for that connection. We want all young alumni to have that feeling.”
