Meet Palitz Scholar Emily Francisco

Emily Francisco is one of two graduate students to receive the Palitz Scholar award this year. A third-year graduate student pursuing concurrent degrees in art history and museum studies, she earned a B.A. in art history and English with a writing cncentration from Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pa. Currently, she is a teaching assistant in the Department of Art and Music Histories, and a curatorial intern at the Everson Museum of Art. She has held additional internships at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
The Louise and Bernard Palitz Art Scholar Award was established in 2011 to support deserving graduate students in art history or museum studies at Syracuse University by longtime SUArt Galleries supporters Louise Beringer Palitz ‘44 and her husband, Bernard. For over 25 years the Palitzes have supported the galleries activities in a variety of ways, including donating important works of art, underwriting exhibitions and publications, and funding the renovation of the SUArt Galleries’ New York City Gallery at Syracuse University Lubin House, now called the Louise and Bernard Palitz Gallery.
As the current president of the George Fisk Comfort Society of Art History, Francisco has worked to continue the growing relationship between the graduate organization and SUArt Galleries. Her main projects included SUArt Kids programming in conjunction with the exhibition Maurice Sendak: 50 Years; 50 Works; 50 Reasons, as well as organizing student docents to give tours of the permanent collection, focusing on themes inspired by the students’ own research interests. Coordinating these collaborative projects and having the opportunity to volunteer at the galleries has allowed Fransico to realize her love of interpretive programming, particularly in university museums. She hopes to pursue a museum career that allows her to combine her passions for research, writing, and collections with her love of working with people.
