A media industry event was recently held at NYC’s Lubin House when the Newhouse School hosted its 2016 Radio and Audio Summit. The event is an annual offering that brings people working in the industry together to hear from panelists on a variety of topics that are both timely and relevant to their jobs. Some of our Newhouse in NYC students were lucky enough to attend as well.

Newhouse Dean Lorraine Branham was in attendance and welcomed everyone before introducing the panel which included Adam CurrySeth FarbmanThea MitchemAndrew MossGevevieve Sponsler and was moderated by Sean Ross. The keynote speaker for the day’s program was Jarl Mohn, the current President and CEO of NPR.

Both the panelists and keynote speaker addressed the pressing changes in the industry. All agreed that technological platforms are changing the way the audience not only consumes news but has also become more segmented, which is making the task of creating relevant content more challenging. Mohn, for instance, made clear that clickbait headlines do not work for NPR, telling attendees that this tactic actually turned the NPR audience off.

Mohn also noted how individual consumer habits vary, how the news is consumed and therefore the newsgathering process has had to adjust. Some people only read headlines, others use Twitter or Facebook as an entry point while others look to long form reporting for an in depth understanding of the news.
